"Hello everyone, welcome back to our Blog. Today, we've got some exciting news from the world of AI and radio. Ready to hear a DJ that never sleeps? Let's dive right in!
Last week, Live 95.5, a radio station in Portland, Oregon, made a groundbreaking announcement. They introduced the world's first AI DJ, affectionately named 'AI Ashley,' after its human inspiration.
AI Ashley broadcasts a cloned version of human host Ashley Elzinga's voice every day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This isn't just a simple voice recording, no. AI Ashley uses an AI-powered tool called 'RadioGPT' developed by Futuri Media. This tool uses GPT-4, the latest generative pre-training model, to generate a script based on trending news and reads it out with a synthetic voice.

But don't worry, human Ashley isn't being replaced. Live 95.5's parent company, Alpha Media, assures us that Elzinga is keeping her job and will still receive her regular salary. It's a hybrid situation: traditional Ashley will host some segments, and AI Ashley will take over others. This allows the human Ashley to focus on other aspects of her job, like community involvement and managing social posts.
Alpha Media isn't using RadioGPT just to cut costs. It's meant to be an efficient tool in radio hosts' toolsets, enabling them to keep the show going without the constraints of human fatigue or scheduling conflicts.
Now, some listeners might be wary of AI DJs. After all, people tune into local radio for the human touch, right? That's why Live 95.5 trained the AI to mimic the voice of their existing radio host, Ashley, whom the audience has already connected with. The AI also introduces itself as AI Ashley, making it clear to listeners when they're hearing the AI versus the human host. Transparency is key; the goal isn't to deceive anyone.
Live 95.5 is one of the first to use RadioGPT, but it certainly won't be the last. Another Portland-based radio station, Alpha Media's KUFO Freedom 970, plans to also use the AI tech.
Of course, there are concerns about AI DJs. A major worry is the potential for the spread of misinformation since fact-checking isn't ChatGPT's strong suit. It has been known to "hallucinate," or confidently provide users with fake information.
But don't worry, there are safeguards in place. RadioGPT relies on human moderation. A team of human moderators reviews and edits the content before it goes on the air. Futuri's tech scans over 250,000 news sources, including stories on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, to identify which topics are trending locally. It then uses GPT-3 to create a script based on these stories.

Furthermore, Futuri CEO Daniel Anstandig assures us that there are safeguards to prevent hallucinatory content from going on air. The AI is programmed to cross-check and reduce the occurrence of speculative or inaccurate content. It also confirms that any generated content does not contain any offensive material.
Exciting, isn't it? The world of radio is evolving, and we're here to witness it.AI Ashley might be the first AI DJ, but she certainly won't be the last. What do you think about this development? Can AI fill the shoes of human DJs, or is the human touch irreplaceable? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
